On Hwy 10, 8 km (5 mi.) west of the junction with Hwy 99 is the green oasis
of farmland and wetland called Delta. Delta covers an area of 336 square
kilometers (130 square miles) and is bounded by the Fraser River, the Strait of
Georgia, Surrey, and the US/Canada border at Boundary Bay. With a population of
96,000 Delta is comprised of three urban communities: North Delta, Ladner, and
Tsawwassen.
Founded in 1882, Ladner is the oldest of the three Delta communities. Located on rich farmland at the mouth of the Fraser River, it's agriculture and fishing industries are a continuing tradition in a diverse community that is now home to over 20,000 residents. Ladner remains Delta's administrative center. The modern Municipal Hall is located on Highway 17 beside the Justice Building. Adjacent is the new Leisure Center which incorporates swimming pools, fitness facilities and an ice arena. One of the earlier municipal halls now houses the Delta's extensive museum. Ladner Village has blended the use of heritage buildings with modern use, creating a charming and interesting downtown core. Picturesque Ladner Harbour is within walking distance of the Village area and is home to pleasure craft as well as fishing vessels. It is no wonder that seafood is prominent on the menus of the many critically acclaimed restaurants found in the historic Village. Centrally situation shopping malls and many unique specialty shops cater to local residents. Farm markets offer a fresh and healthy supply of local produce. The Fraser River estuary attracts approximately 1.5 million migratory birds each year, including swans, ducks and snow geese. Walking trails offer good access year-round to the natural wonders of these rich marshlands. Whether you want to walk or picnic, cycle or enjoy boating on the Fraser, living in Ladner provides a peaceful setting for new home. Located within an easy commute to other districts of Vancouver, Ladner has become a popular residential haven, away from the rush of the city, but close enough for convenience.
