| Located
in the southern-most point of Delta, Tsawwassen is
situated on a long peninsula bounded on both sides by ocean. Lying south
of the Fraser River and just north of the U.S. border, South Delta has a
population of approximately 90,000 and is known for sunshine, great stretches of
Delta water frontage and upscale residences, all within 45 kilometers of
downtown Vancouver.
Facing the sea is thought to be the native peoples use of the word Tsawwassen. Another theory is that the word is a derivative of Chewasin, the name of the native tribe whose made this home in the 19th century. Tsawwassen's natural attributes of sandy beaches allow for the enjoyment of water sports and passive pursuits in the unique coastal parkland. Boundary Bay Regional Park is situated on the most important bay in British Columbia for migrating and wintering birds and waterfowl. Sandpipers are numerous in summer, whilst 150,000 water birds, mostly ducks, winter here. Many homes have been built on the bluff to take advantage of the splendid panoramic views across the Strait of Georgia to the Gulf Islands, the mountains of Vancouver Island and Mount Baker, located in Washington State. Tsawwassen is primarily a residential community. A commercial core which services the needs of local residents is located on 56th Street, and provides residents with shopping malls and professional services. Splash Down Park located near the
Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal is a favorite with local children and tourists.
